Stable Fly

Stable flies (stomoxys calcitrans) are common in most areas of Australia. These biting flies generally bite at the most exposed area of the dog's ear, generally the tip of the ear or the fold. Both sexes of this fly will search for blood meals, often twice a day, and can engorge on blood up to three times their own body weight.
Stable flies bites are quite painful for the dog. Continued exposure to stable flies with no repellent can lead to lesions.

• Initial erythema (redness) leading to exudation (“weeping”)

• Crust formation commonly follows

• Self trauma exacerbates lesions, attracting more flies in the cooler months the fly's life span is 1–2 months, in warmer weather it is reduced to 3–4 weeks of adult life.
